The story:
In the wake of a gruesome contortionist accident, the performers of Cirque du Apogée want to unionize. They call Frank, the head of the performers’ union, who has been dreaming for decades of the chance to organize a circus. Frank enlists the help of his old friend Jude, the organizer-turned-professor who wrote the book on organizing and is a true believer in the cause. But the GM of the circus, who’s in debt to the mafia, is pulling out all the stops to keep the authorities - and the union - out of his operation.
After almost a year of work, the organizing campaign has hit a dead end, and the workers are starting to lose hope. So Frank and Jude call a labor lawyer named Sarah — Gris & Associates’ rising star — to help bring their campaign over the finish line. But Sarah’s got problems of her own. On the brink of burn-out and financial ruin, Sarah must win this campaign for the union so she can get the promotion and the raise she so desperately needs, or be forced to give up everything she’s worked for, move home, and start over. Desperately clinging to control after letting it slip that she’s falling for Jude, Sarah tries to balance the pressures of this organizing campaign with figuring out what she needs — at work and in her and Jude’s adjoining motel rooms — and what she’s willing to surrender.
But Sarah's juggling act intensifies when Sarah's ex-boyfriend, Nathan, is hired to defeat her client’s organizing campaign. Just as Sarah gains the trust of the circus performers, and victory seems within reach, Nathan presents Sarah with an irresistible opportunity: to pay off all her debts and make more money than she ever dreamed. The catch? She’d have to go work for the enemy, and betray the values underpin her career and her possible future with Jude.
